The Civil Law Notary is the independent holder of a public office and one of the oldest legal professions in Europe. The word notary derived from the latin word “notarius” meaning literally “fastwriter”. In the intervening centuries the Civil Law Notary has changed from a simple recorder to an actual profession involved in the provision of “preventative justice”.
Civil Law Notaries a
re highly qualified, experienced lawyers, whose technical qualifications, alongwith a sense of social competence are particularly promoted during their vocational training and further training. In Saxony the Civil Law Notary practices exclusively as such, whereas in some other German states Civil Law Notaries may also act as lawyers.
